<< WAR >>

Since sounding off on the war looks so fun I think I'll try my hand at it.

For those that haven't read it, I stole the quote from bree's entry.

At first, my knee jerk reaction is to hate the war and everything to do with it. But I realize I can't hate the people fighting. It's a job, one they do to feed their families and make their livings, I can't hate them. I support troops, but I am utterly opposed to the war.

As to Dubya to Hitler and Stalin comparisons?

"We must make clear to the Germans that the wrong for which their fallen leaders are on trial is not that they lost the war, but that they started it. And we must not allow ourselves to be drawn into a trial of the causes of the war for our position is that no grievances or policies will justify resort to aggressive war. It is utterly renounced and condemned as an instrument of policy." - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson, U.S. representative to the International Conference on Military Trials, Aug. 12, 1945.

Does that make sense?

Yes, the people who make the policies are wrong. But can you really expect them to do any different? If no one else has noticed, the American economy is in a bit of a funk. While this war is really great for diverting attention from it, the cheap oil we get afterward may just be better.

For this reason, don't be mad at France. It's true that they have no benevolent agenda in refusing war. Just economic gain. What else do you expect? Not to mention that "Freedom" fries and toast are just a bit too remeniscent of WWII's "Liberty Cabbage."

But really, policy makers the world over are doing about what everyone expects them to do. So why complain? Because even if it's expected it's still not right. And we live in what is supposed to be a representative democracy (although the last presidential election has left me with some doubts on that one). And before anyone tries to tell me how troops in Iraq are fighting for my freedom, let me just say that I'm pretty sure Saddam Hussein has never limited my freedom in any way. Dubya on the other hand... well, that's another story.

Strong as steel, but battered beyond belief
